A phone that rocks on a flat table or a laptop whose trackpad has started lifting is not merely getting old. The battery may be swelling, which means the disposal plan has changed.
The tempting responses are exactly the wrong ones: press the case closed, charge it “one last time,” pry the battery out, or leave the device in a drawer until the next electronics-recycling event. A swollen lithium-ion battery is damaged and a potential fire hazard. The job is no longer to squeeze a little more life from the device. It is to stop adding energy, avoid making the damage worse, and arrange a safe handoff.
This guide is U.S.-focused. Local collection rules vary, so the destination should tell you how it accepts a damaged battery before you transport anything.
First, decide whether this is an active emergency
Swelling can show up as a lifted phone back, a separating screen, a laptop case that no longer sits flat, a raised trackpad, or a battery pack that has changed shape. Odor, leaking, unusual heat, smoke, and odd noises are more urgent warning signs.
If the device is hot, smoking, hissing, leaking, burning, or producing a strong unusual odor, do not keep inspecting it. Do not carry it through the building or try to cool it with an improvised treatment. Move people away, avoid inhaling fumes, and call 911 or your local fire service. EPA says swelling indicates damage and a potential fire hazard; if there appears to be an imminent fire risk, emergency help may be necessary. FDNY guidance likewise says to discontinue use when a battery changes shape or color, leaks, smells, or makes odd noises, and to call 911.
If the device is cool, stable, and not emitting anything, you have time to arrange a controlled handoff. That does not make it safe to charge, test, bend, compress, or dismantle.
Do these five things
1. Stop using and charging the device
Disconnect external power if you can do so without pressing on or disturbing the swollen area. Do not power the device back on to copy one more file or confirm that it still works. Charging adds energy to a battery that is already showing physical damage.
If the device holds your only copy of important data, tell the repair provider during the handoff call. Data recovery is a separate problem to solve after the battery is made safe. 2. Do not press, puncture, or peel
Do not try to flatten a bulging case. Do not pierce the battery to “release the pressure.” Do not use a metal tool near an exposed cell, and do not force out a battery that the product was not designed for the user to remove.
EPA explicitly notes that not all batteries are removable or user-serviceable. Its consumer guidance says to contact the battery or device manufacturer for handling information when a lithium-ion battery is damaged.
3. Keep the situation from getting worse
For a cool, stable device, keep it away from heat, direct sun, combustible clutter, children, and pets while you obtain instructions. Protect it from being crushed, dropped, or accidentally charged. Do not put it back in a crowded junk drawer.
EPA offers a bucket containing a fire suppressant such as sand or kitty litter as one possible interim location for a swollen computer battery when there is no imminent threat. That is an example, not permission to handle a hot or unstable device. The manufacturer, local household hazardous-waste program, or fire service may give different instructions for your battery’s size and condition.
4. Confirm a destination before leaving home
Start with the device manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Then contact your city or county household hazardous-waste program. A certified electronics recycler may also accept the intact device, but acceptance of ordinary electronics does not guarantee acceptance of a damaged battery.
Ask specific questions:
- Do you accept a swollen or otherwise damaged lithium-ion battery?
- Should the battery remain installed in the device?
- Is an appointment or special drop-off location required?
- What packaging and transport instructions should I follow?
- Do you accept this battery size? A phone, power tool, e-bike, UPS, and home energy-storage battery are not interchangeable cases.
Get an explicit yes. A map pin labeled “battery recycling” is not enough.
5. Do not improvise shipping or air travel
PHMSA regulates lithium batteries as hazardous materials in commercial transportation and warns that damaged, defective, or recalled batteries have a greater potential to short-circuit, release heat, or catch fire. A mail-in program must provide packaging and shipping instructions that comply with USPS or Department of Transportation requirements.
The FAA says damaged or recalled batteries and battery-powered devices likely to create sparks or dangerous heat must not be carried aboard an aircraft unless the battery has been removed or otherwise made safe. A swollen device is not something to slip into a carry-on and explain at the gate.
The household recycling bin is not a battery program
EPA’s rule for consumers is simple: lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them do not belong in household garbage or municipal recycling bins. Waste and recycling equipment can crush them, creating a fire hazard in trucks, sorting facilities, or landfills.
For an undamaged loose battery, EPA recommends protecting the terminals with nonconductive tape or isolating the battery in its own plastic bag before taking it to an appropriate collection point. Do not automatically apply that routine to a swollen or leaking battery. Damage changes the handling requirements, so ask the manufacturer or receiving facility first.
Retail collection boxes are built for the battery types and conditions named by the program. Do not leave a damaged pack beside a box after hours. That is not recycling; it is transferring an unannounced hazard to whoever opens the store.
Bigger batteries require a different plan
This article is mainly about small consumer electronics such as phones, tablets, laptops, headphones, cameras, and compact battery packs.
An e-bike, scooter, UPS, electric vehicle, or stationary energy-storage system contains a larger battery and can create a much larger incident. Do not use a small-device disposal routine for it. Contact the manufacturer, installer, dealer, or local fire and hazardous-waste authorities. EPA specifically directs consumers with medium- and large-scale batteries to the manufacturer, automobile dealer, or installer because these systems may not be consumer-removable.
Replace the junk drawer with a handoff rule
The most useful household battery policy fits on one line:
Normal end of life goes to an approved battery or electronics recycler; visible damage gets a confirmed handoff.
That rule prevents two common mistakes: treating every battery as ordinary curbside recycling, and postponing a damaged battery until it disappears under a pile of cables.
It also helps to inspect rarely used power banks, old phones, handheld consoles, cameras, and laptops a few times a year. Look for case separation, unexpected rocking on a flat surface, discoloration, leakage, or heat. Store devices at room temperature and away from direct sun, and follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions.
A swelling battery has already delivered the diagnosis that matters: stop. The remaining work is not a heroic repair. It is finding the person or facility prepared to take responsibility for the next safe step.
