ShittyQR

ShittyQR

A real QR generator wrapped in an intentionally ridiculous interface.

Status: Live / intentionally ridiculous
Live site: shittyqr.cyganlabs.com

If you need a QR code and would prefer the tool to be useful instead of dignified, this is the intentionally ridiculous version. It still makes working QR codes. It just refuses to pretend every tiny web utility needs a dashboard, a pricing tier, and seven growth-hacking popups stacked around the button.

ShittyQR interface showing the intentionally ridiculous but functional QR generator.
ShittyQR is a functional parody of QR generators that forgot the user had somewhere else to be.

What it is

ShittyQR is the deliberately chaotic sibling of SimpleQR: same basic premise, much worse taste. You paste text or a URL, generate a QR code, and get on with your life. The nonsense around it is the joke. The output still has to work.

That distinction matters. A useless joke tool is just clutter. A joke tool that still solves the problem can make a point without wasting your afternoon.

Why it exists

ShittyQR exists because too many simple tools slowly mutate into product funnels. What started as “paste a link, get a result” becomes account creation, analytics upsells, brand kits, team seats, and a newsletter modal asking if you are ready to “transform your QR journey.” That is a lot of ceremony for one square.

The CyganLabs opinion here is pretty simple: small tools should do one thing clearly, locally when possible, and then shut up. ShittyQR says that with a deliberately bad interface instead of a mission statement.

What it does

  • Generates QR codes for text and URLs.
  • Adds joke presets and intentionally chaotic interface language.
  • Works as a parody of bloated “simple” tools while still producing usable QR output.
  • Pairs with SimpleQR, the clean version for people who want the straightforward path.

When to use it

Use ShittyQR when you want the QR code and the joke. Use SimpleQR when you want the QR code without the joke. Both exist because tiny utilities should feel disposable in the best way: open them, do the thing, leave.

What it does not try to be

ShittyQR is not a productivity platform, QR campaign manager, enterprise brand system, or lifestyle choice. It does not need a roadmap. It needs to generate the square and make the bloat look silly.

That is as much product strategy as this needs.

Current status

ShittyQR is live at shittyqr.cyganlabs.com. It is a CyganLabs project page first and a usable toy second — or maybe the other way around, depending on whether you came for the joke or the utility.

If I keep polishing it, the danger is accidentally making it too polished. The useful future improvement is boring: clearer download/copy behavior, better accessibility pass, and enough restraint not to ruin the joke by explaining it to death.
